Teach For India

Teach For India is an NGO working in the field of education. The organization focus in imparting education to underprivileged children in government schools.

Every year TFI opens registration for volunteers (1 month) and fellowships (2-year program)to join TFI, providing opportunities to India’s youth to teach children from low-income communities. You can work as a full-time volunteer or as a part-time volunteer for a month. In fellowship, you will be trained by the professional for three months and then you will be placed in a school that will be associated with TFI. When it's about NGOs, TFI has been leading the way since 2006 to combat educational inequity in society.

To become a part of TFI, you have to go through an interview and group discussion. After being selected and taking the induction program, schools are allotted to each volunteer.

Here we present the working experience of the volunteers from USCT who worked with TFI:-

1) RHYTHM SARDANA :

A Student of biochemical 2016 batch at USCT. Worked as a full-time volunteer at TFI for one month. Here is the review of how Rhythm feels about her class and experience of working with TFI.

"The volunteering program offers teaching assistance in govt schools to convey quality education to students studying there.

But, surprisingly the 1-month volunteering spree has taught me more than I could teach those kids. The school that I had been allotted was located in a slum area of the northeast region of Delhi which was deprived of basic sanitation facilities, and students came from financially distressed backgrounds.

It was only my first day that I paid a community visit to a child's home. That indestructible memory reminds me of ten people barely existing in a dingy room of 10X10ft. The other day, I met a girl who had three brothers enrolled in a drug- rehabilitation center in Delhi. Next, I came across a child with extremely weak eyesight who couldn't afford a pair of spectacles. Those days were a spec of continuous realization of how these children were riding a tight vicious circle of poverty, illiteracy, and ill health.

On the other hand, despite all odds that life had brought them, one could always witness wide smiles on their faces and contentment in their hearts. They welcome you with all the love, affection, and warmth that they have, only to enrich your soul with compassion and make you see life from a different lens altogether.

"Appreciate what you have. Some people pray for things that you take for granted."

TFI works with thousands of government schools, teachers, and volunteers intending to provide something more than just quality education. The organization's goal is to eradicate every possible cause of illiteracy and transform the education sector of India. I would advise everyone to step forward for the noble cause by joining TFI's volunteer program or the 2-year fellowship program that they offer.

2) RISHI AHUJA :

A Student of biochemical 2016 batch at USCT. Worked as a full-time volunteer at TFI for one month. Here is the review of how Rishi feel about his class and experience of working with TFI.

Rishi Ahuja with his class

"My volunteering journey began in July 2017. I joined TFI as a full-time volunteer for a month in govt boys senior secondary school, Janakpuri teaching kids of the 7th and 6th standard. At TFI, We get exposed to the reality of India’s education system. TFI works for educational equity in India and our goal is that one day all children will attain an excellent education."

I got placed in a secondary school and within few days you realize that your duty is not just for those 40 kids. I was scared and excited and happy and a lot more. Though, the Kids were over excited to see their ‘new Bhaiya’. I started felling in love with their innocence. From making test papers to checking homework and exam sheets to teaching new things every day made me really happy and fulfilled. But not only teaching, our work was to make them creative, respectful and disciplined. Small tasks and rewards for performance were given to them on day to day basis.

Within a week, they all seemed like a family to me, not only teaching, but playing with them and having lunch became an integral part of my life for that month.
Another milestone was organising workshops for the kids in mid of our race for completing syllabus. Various workshops were organised at TFI for the kids like foil art workshop where they learned to make new things from foil. Also, we organised theatre workshop for kids to improve their communication skills and a trip to Nehru planetarium was also organised. After all, education is not only books

The students were from unprivileged families. I realized that how important is to educate the underprivileged sector of our society because they really have a potential and skills to work better than others. Money should never be a constraint to education. My students love Rosa park, their stories. They identify discrimination and as a class, we used to discuss what “unfair”.
I saw how the bhaiyas and didis and other fellows worked with government school teachers. I saw that these individuals actually wanted to make a difference in the education sector. Teach For India is like a family for me where I get to learn every single day. Every one motivates me here and makes me a better person. My communication skills have improved a whole lot. Before joining Teach For India, I was not able to speak in front of anyone. Now, I have the confidence to speak to anyone, even if it doesn’t make sense sometimes. There have been positive changes that have occurred in my life after joining this organization and through Teach For India family and their motivation, I feel better than before.
Thankyou TFI for such a great opportunity."

3)SAHIL SHARMA :

A student from biochemical 2016 batch at USCT, Theatre artist and founder of Sahil Sharma Foundation. Here's the review of how Sahil feel after the interaction with children at TFI.
Sahil Sharma workshop
"One word to sum up those incredible days is - Amazing! I used to get nervous as I was going back to the atmosphere from where I came three years ago but when in front of those students, as they were full of energy, enthusiasm, curiosity to learn something, I used to get very comfortable. The best thing about kids is their openness to learn anything which comes their way. They aren’t introduced to some major stereotypes of the society and that makes things very easy for teachers. We can easily mould them in whatever way we can! Brilliant experience and kudos to all the fellows and people at TFI for this great initiative. Special thanks to Rishi Ahuja, Himanshu and Rhythm Sardana for providing me with this incredible opportunity. Would love to be a part of this initiative to the best of my capacity in whatever way I can! "

4) TANUJ  HANDA :

A student of 2016 biochemical batch at USCT and founder of Foil Art. Here's the review of how Tanuj feels after the interaction with children during workshops.

Tanuj handa with children for workshop
"When I got this big opportunity of teaching my art to children, I was all excited and nervous. I entered to the school and there I saw children looking with great excitement to me, that made me more conscious but as I got started with my workshop, all my nervousness flew away and I got indulged in teaching them my art. Children came up with more creative ideas with foil paper which made me stunned and I never thought of such ideas when I was that small like them. My work was appreciated and I got to present my work in various schools. This interaction helps me develop my teaching skills and impart knowledge to young minds and enlighten them with creativity. I wholeheartedly offer my thanks to Rhythm, Rishi and the teachers working at TFI for giving me such a golden opportunity to teach my art to children. Looking forward to with them again in future. "
